Jobless Claims Fall to a 16-Month Low

Jobless claims fell to a 16-month low as we kick off 2023, according to the weekly survey from the Department of Labor.

  • Seasonally adjusted initial claims were 187,000 for the week ending January 13th, a decrease of 16,000 from the previous week’s revised level and the lowest level since September 2022.
  • Economists thought claims would rise to 207k.

Continuing Claims. Seasonally adjusted insured unemployment fell to 1.806M for the week ending January 6th, a decrease of 26,000 from the previous week’s revised level and the lowest level since October 2023.
