Crimes Impact On Housing

Crime isn’t just an issue that impacts how someone might vote. It apparently also impacts where someone might live, according to a new report from Redfin…(Redfin)

  • Half of all homeowners who moved since the pandemic began said that crime and safety was an important factor in determining where they moved.
  • This includes all those who said it factored “a lot” or was the “most important factor” in their decision.

NOTE: 35% of renters said crime and safety was an important factor.

Redfin Chief Economist Daryl Fairweather, said remote work is changing what cities must do to attract and retain residents…

  • “Concerns with crime, especially among homeowners, contributed to a recent increase in migration out of cities and into more suburban and rural areas. Cities historically have been able to attract residents looking for high paying jobs, but now that remote work is ubiquitous, some may have to work on improving safety and other quality of life factors to retain and attract residents.”

Could this become a bigger problem? Potentially. 78% of voters said they believe violent crime is a “major problem” in the United States, and 73% said it is increasing according to a Morning Consult back in July.

  • INTERESTING: There is little partisan deviation on whether violent crime is a problem in the country, but Republican voters (79%) are slightly more likely than Democratic voters (68%).
