College, COVID, & Housing, Oh My!

As if being a college freshman wasn’t nerve-racking enough a new survey from Realtor.com who partnered with JUV looked at a national sample of college students to find out about their experience with seeking and securing housing for the fall semester…(Realtor.com)

Before we can get to price concerns, we can’t forget about the elephant in the room named COVID-19.

  • With fall semester beginning in less than a month, 34% college students have not yet finalized fall housing arrangements and 42% blame their housing hesitancy on COVID.

COVID is changing the game when it comes to college housing which is undoubtedly putting upward pressure on prices.

  • Over 25% of students “reported that their rent for this year is higher than it was a year ago.”
  • Because of the increase in rent, “35% of them saying that they cannot afford to rent an apartment in their college town”

Considering the fact that 56% of college students lived at home last year college housing could be quite chaotic over these last few weeks.
