Busy Day For Biden

The Biden administration extended the nationwide ban on evictions for a month. Sure, they have extended the moratorium before, but this time they are super, super serial… (AP)

  • Dr. Rochelle Walensky, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, extended the evictions moratorium from June 30 until July 31. The CDC said “this is intended to be the final extension of the moratorium.”

The latest data shows that at the end of March, 6.4 million American households were behind on their rent. I’m sure that number has shrunk over the last 2 months, but it is, undoubtedly, still a problem. However, I’m not sure extending the moratorium is the solution. It’s hard to create urgency when the administration keeps extending the deadline. Many will think, well they extended it last time why not one more time? That is not a conducive attitude when it comes to getting renters and landlords to the negotiating table.

President also endorsed a bipartisan infrastructure deal that will overhaul the nation’s transportation, water, and broadband infrastructure… (POLITICO)

  • The bipartisan framework, led by Sens. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio), would include close to $600 billion in new spending on roads, bridges, and other traditional infrastructure projects.

This agreement is far from assured. While Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said Thursday that he supports the framework, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell said he’s “still listening.” President Biden, himself, cautioned Congress that this was not complete. He made it clear that he would not sign the bipartisan bill unless his other social spending priorities, including child care and clean energy, would pass through Congress as well.
